If you live in Spring and owe back taxes or keep getting IRS notices, Blaga Veleva, EA, can review the letters, pull your IRS records and set up a plan to resolve the balance. The Tax & Business Solutions office sits on FM 1960 West, west of I-45, and can also handle your case entirely by phone and secure portal.

What does a stack of IRS notices usually mean?

Most often it means a balance has gone unpaid and the IRS is working through its reminder sequence. A balance due bill comes first, then reminders such as the CP501 and the CP503. Each one is firmer than the last, and penalties and interest keep building in between.

Lay the letters out in date order before you call. The newest one tells you where your account stands today.

A notice is not always right, either. Payments sometimes post to the wrong year, and an amended return may not be processed yet. Checking each letter against your own records comes before paying anything.

How much do back taxes grow while they sit?

They grow every single month. The failure-to-pay penalty is "0.5% of the unpaid taxes for each month or part of a month the tax remains unpaid", and it "won't exceed 25% of your unpaid taxes" (IRS failure to pay penalty). Interest is charged on top of that. If you filed on time and have an approved payment plan, the penalty rate drops to 0.25% per month while the plan runs.

So the first job is stopping the growth, even before the full balance is settled. Paying the wrong year can backfire too, which is why the account gets checked before money moves.

What are the ways to resolve back taxes?

The right route depends on what you can pay and whether every return is filed.

  • Payment plan. An installment agreement spreads the balance into monthly payments.
  • Penalty relief. For eligible 2025 and later returns, the Automatic Exemption from Penalty applies on its own, with no request. Older penalties can come off through First Time Abate or reasonable cause. See penalty abatement.
  • Offer in compromise. For people who cannot pay in full, an offer may settle for less. The IRS generally will not accept one if a payment plan could cover the debt.

Sometimes the answer is a mix: penalty relief first, then a payment plan for what remains. The whole picture is on the back taxes page.

What will Blaga check before recommending a plan?

She begins with your IRS account transcripts, which list each assessment, payment and penalty by year. Next she confirms every required return is on file, since the IRS asks for that before most payment plans and offers. Then she weighs the balance against your income and monthly costs.

Only after that does she suggest a route, so the plan you sign is one you can keep up with.

She also notes how much time is left to collect each year. The IRS generally has 10 years from the date tax was assessed to collect it (IRS: time IRS can collect tax), and that date can shape which option fits.

Should I call the IRS myself first?

You can, though it helps to know your numbers before that call. After you sign Form 2848, Blaga can talk to the IRS for you, which spares you the hold time and the guesswork. If any letter mentions a levy or calls itself a final notice, phone the office the day you open it.

If you do call the IRS yourself, write down the date, the employee's name or ID number, and what you were told. Those notes help whoever picks up the case next.
