Second reminder

A CP503 is the IRS's second reminder that you still owe a balance, which means earlier notices got no payment or reply. Treat it as urgent. Pay the entire balance by the due date shown on your notice, or arrange a payment plan, because irs.gov says a Notice of Federal Tax Lien may be filed next.

What does the CP503 notice mean?

It means the IRS has written to you before about this balance and heard nothing back. The irs.gov page says: "This notice is your second reminder that you still owe a balance on one of your tax accounts." By now most people have also received a CP14 and a CP501.

How much time do I have?

The deadline is the date printed on your letter. irs.gov states: "You must pay the entire balance by the due date shown on your notice to avoid additional penalties and interest." Read that date off your own letter (irs.gov CP503 page).

Every month the balance sits unpaid, the failure to pay penalty adds 0.5% of the unpaid tax, up to 25%, plus interest.

What happens if I ignore it?

A lien becomes likely. The IRS says it "may file a Notice of Federal Tax Lien if we haven't already done so." A lien is a public notice to your creditors and can affect your ability to get credit. Past this point the series turns to levy warnings, so read up on how an IRS levy works too.

What should I do this week?

  1. Open every IRS envelope you set aside and line them up by date.
  2. Confirm the tax year and amount on the CP503 match your return.
  3. Look through your bank statements for payments the IRS may not have credited.
  4. Choose a path: pay in full, pay part and apply for a payment plan, or call to dispute.
  5. Call the number on the notice before the due date.
  6. Keep copies of everything you send or receive.

How an Enrolled Agent helps with a CP503

Blaga Veleva, EA takes over the contact with the IRS so the second reminder is the last one. With a Form 2848 power of attorney on file, she can call before the payment due date, confirm what is owed, set up a payment plan, and request a Collection Appeals Program (CAP) appeal before collection action if you disagree.

If penalties make up part of the bill, she can ask for penalty relief. First Time Abate covers older years, and the IRS's Automatic Exemption from Penalty applies to 2025 and later returns.

Meet her at the Suite 221 office on FM 1960 West, or send the CP503 by secure portal if you live outside Houston.

Which notice usually comes next?

The CP503 page doesn't name the next letter, but the next step for an unpaid balance is the CP504. irs.gov describes the CP504 as the notice you get "because we haven't received payment of your unpaid balance," and it is the IRS Notice of Intent to Levy.

Questions

Questions people ask

Q1What does a second IRS reminder mean?

It means the IRS sent at least one earlier notice and got no payment or reply. The balance, interest and penalties are still growing, and the IRS is preparing to take stronger steps, starting with a possible lien.

Q2Is a CP503 serious?

Yes. It is still a reminder, not a levy, but it is the last one before the CP504 intent to levy. It is a good moment to call the IRS or have an Enrolled Agent call for you.

Q3Will the IRS file a lien after a CP503?

It may. irs.gov says the IRS may file a Notice of Federal Tax Lien if it hasn't already. Paying or setting up a plan before the due date is the surest way to keep that from happening.

Q4How much does an IRS payment plan cost to set up?

Online, a long-term plan paid by direct debit costs $29 to set up, and a short-term plan of 180 days or less has no setup fee. Low income filers can have the direct debit fee waived.
