Missouri City taxpayers facing IRS penalties can ask Blaga Veleva, EA to review which relief route fits: the Automatic Exemption from Penalty, which the IRS applies on its own to eligible 2025 and later returns, First Time Abate for earlier years, or reasonable cause. Where a request is needed, she makes it with the IRS for you, by phone and secure portal or at the FM 1960 W office.
Can IRS penalties really be removed?
Often, yes, when you meet the rules. The IRS offers administrative penalty relief for failure to file, failure to pay and failure to deposit, regardless of amount, if your compliance history qualifies.
Interest tied to a removed penalty comes off too. Our penalty abatement page lays out each route.
Relief does not cover every penalty, though. The estimated tax penalty, for example, does not count against your history and is handled separately. Blaga reads your account transcript to see exactly which penalties were charged and which of them qualify.
What changed with the 2026 Automatic Exemption from Penalty?
Relief for newer returns no longer needs a request. The IRS announced the Automatic Exemption from Penalty on July 8, 2026 (IR-2026-83): "Taxpayers do not need to take action to receive this relief," and the IRS will send a notice confirming it. AEP covers eligible original returns from tax year 2025 on. If a penalty notice arrives anyway during the transition, the IRS says qualifying taxpayers "may contact the IRS to request First Time Abate."
For 2024 and earlier years, First Time Abate still applies, and you have to ask for it. Knowing which year falls under which rule saves wasted letters.
One detail people miss: under First Time Abate, the failure-to-pay penalty may keep accruing until the tax is paid in full. Paying the balance, or setting up a plan, alongside the relief request keeps the savings from shrinking.
What if you do not have a clean three-year history?
Then reasonable cause may be the path. Serious illness, a disaster or records lost through no fault of yours can qualify. The IRS says the failure-to-file penalty doesn't apply if you show the late filing was due to reasonable cause.
Blaga writes the request with the facts and documents that support it. Vague letters rarely succeed.
Timing helps too. A request sent soon after the event, with dated records such as hospital bills or insurance claims, is far more convincing than one written years later from memory.
Even when a request is only partly granted, the penalty that remains is smaller, and the interest charged on it shrinks along with it.
How does a penalty request work when you are in Fort Bend County?
Remotely, in most cases. Upload the penalty notice and your account transcript, or let Blaga pull it under a power of attorney. She drafts the request, you approve it, and she submits it.
You hear back by phone or email. If you want to discuss a sensitive reasonable cause story face to face, book time at FM 1960 W.
You also see the request before it goes out. If the IRS denies it, Blaga explains whether an appeal is worth pursuing and what extra evidence might change the answer.
Fort Bend residents can send the whole request package without leaving home.
Which notices usually carry the penalties?
Balance-due letters such as the CP14 and the reminder CP501 list penalties next to the tax. If you still owe after relief, see payment plans. Our full list of cities is on the areas page.
Before asking for relief, make sure every return is filed. Relief looks at your compliance history, and an open filing gap can block help you might otherwise get. Our unfiled returns page covers that first step.

Questions people ask
Q1How do I get IRS penalties removed if I live in Missouri City?
Ask an Enrolled Agent such as Blaga Veleva, EA to check your history and request First Time Abate, rely on the automatic exemption for newer years, or argue reasonable cause. She checks every year on your transcript, not only the one on the latest notice.
Q2Can penalty abatement be handled without an office visit?
Yes. The notice, transcripts and signed authorization all move through the secure portal. Nothing about the request needs you in the room. You review and approve the letter before it is sent.
Q3What is first-time abatement and do I qualify?
It is relief for taxpayers with three years of timely compliance on the same return type. It still covers years before 2025; newer returns fall under the automatic exemption. Business returns can qualify too, with a few extra rules.
