Self-employed people and 1099 contractors in Cypress can work with Blaga Veleva, EA, on their returns, quarterly estimates and record keeping. Tax & Business Solutions is farther east along the same road, on FM 1960 West, and can run the whole process by phone and secure portal if that suits your schedule better.
What changes when you start getting 1099s instead of a W-2?
No one withholds tax for you anymore. As a contractor or freelancer, you owe income tax and self-employment tax on your profit, and you are expected to pay during the year rather than all at once in April. Self-employment tax covers Social Security and Medicare, the share an employer used to split with you. Plenty of people find this out from a large bill the first spring after leaving a salaried job.
On the other side of the ledger, you can deduct the ordinary costs of earning that income. The self-employed tax preparation page explains how that return works.
Your first year as a contractor is the one most worth getting help with, since the habits you set then carry forward.
Which records should a 1099 worker keep?
Keep a simple, steady record of money in and money out:
- every 1099-NEC, 1099-K or 1099-MISC you receive, plus income nobody reported on a form
- receipts for supplies, software, phone and tools
- a mileage log if you drive for work
- measurements of any part of your home used only for work
- health insurance premiums you pay yourself
If keeping this up feels like a second job, monthly bookkeeping help is available.
Use a separate bank account or card for work costs if you can. It turns year-end sorting into a quick review instead of a hunt through personal statements.
How do quarterly estimated payments work?
You send the IRS part of your expected tax several times a year, based on what you think you will earn. Paying too little can bring an underpayment penalty, and paying nothing can leave a hard bill at filing time. If a balance is still unpaid after the due date, the IRS adds a monthly failure-to-pay charge as well (IRS failure to pay penalty).
Blaga works out an amount from your actual numbers, then adjusts it if income rises or drops mid-year. This is where tax planning matters most for a contractor.
One habit makes it easier: move a fixed share of each payment you receive into a separate savings account. When the quarterly date arrives, the money is already there.
What if the IRS says I left out 1099 income?
That letter is usually a CP2000. A payer reported income that your return does not show. It is a proposal rather than a final bill, and you can agree, partly agree or disagree with documents. Before answering, check each line against your own records, because duplicate or misreported 1099s do happen.
If the income really was left off, the fix is usually to agree and then pay or arrange a plan. Send every page of the letter through the portal, not just the first. The reply date matters, and the IRS does allow you to ask for more time when you need it.
Should a contractor form an LLC?
Sometimes, but rarely for taxes alone. A single-member LLC is taxed like a sole proprietor by default, so forming one does not lower the bill by itself. It can make sense for liability or for keeping business money separate. If you decide to form one, see Texas LLC registration, and ask Blaga whether an S corporation election would change anything at your income level. Changing structure later is possible, but it is simpler to decide with your real numbers in front of you.

Questions people ask
Q1Do I have to come to the office?
There is no requirement to visit. Contractors in Cypress can send 1099s and expense totals through the secure portal and handle questions by phone.
Q2Can I deduct my car if I drive for gig work?
Usually, for the business miles. Keep a log of dates, trips and miles, and Blaga will help you pick the method that fits your records. Driving from home to a regular workplace generally does not count.
Q3I got a 1099-K from a payment app. Is all of it taxable?
Not necessarily. A 1099-K shows payments processed, which can include personal transfers or refunds. Your return reports the business income, and your records show which part that is.
